Asustek, Acer to Challenge Monthly Shipment of 1 M. NB PCs

2008/08/27
Taipei, Aug. 27, 2008 (CENS)--With Intel Corp. officially launching its new Atom processors in August, Asustek Computer Inc., and Acer Inc., two Taiwanese world-caliber notebook PC vendors, are both expected to challenge single-month shipment of 1 million units of the products in August, according to company sources.

Since Intel started promoting its Atom series processors in August, Acer has seen its August sales of notebook PCs grow significantly from July, when the brand sold about 300,000 units. Furthermore, Acer is very likely to see its single-month sales of Aspire One exceed that of its counterpart Eee PC, a low-price laptop sold under Asus, in the month.

On the other hand, Asustek is also expected to post shipment of between 800,000 and 1 million units of Eee PC in August and over 2 million units for the third quarter of this year, according to industry insiders. However, the brand already projects its third-quarter shipment to reach between 1.5 million and 1.8 million units.

In fact, Acer and Asustek have fiercely competed with each other in the market for low-priced laptops this year by launching Aspire One and Eee PC, respectively. At the moment, Asustek is still the No. 1 brand in the market. However, Acer`s Aspire One has become increasingly popular since August, thanks to debut of Intel`s new Atom series processor, which has been widely adopted in Acer`s low-price laptops.

Noteworthy is that the two brands have also paid great attention to cooperation with telecom service providers, with Acer planning to launch free Aspire One with telecom service contracts, and Asustek to work with 4 European and 2 Japanese telecom companies to promote free Eee PC in the future.
