TFT-LCD Makers Revenues Heat Up in Aug.

2008/09/18
Taipei, Sept. 18, 2008 (CENS)--Most thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel manufacturers in Taiwan recently reported significant growth in revenues for August, according to industry source.

Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), the second-largest player on the island, reported the highest monthly revenue growth of 22.70% among peers.

Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd. (CPT), the No. 3 player in Taiwan, registered consolidated revenue of NT$8.85 billion (US$277.43 million at US$1: NT$31.9) in August, up 11.7% from previous month but down 43.4% from the same month of last year.

CMO reported August consolidated revenue of NT$28.5 billion (US$893.42 million), up 22.7% from previous month but down 3.3% from a year earlier. The firm shipped 5.97 million large-sized (over-10-inch) panels, a 23.5% monthly increase, and 12.11 million small/medium-sized panels, a 43% sequential decrease.

HannStar Display Corp. raked in revenue of NT$4.81 billion (US$150.6 million) in August, down 2.9% from previous month, and scored accumulated revenue of NT$49.43 billion (US$1.55 billion) in the first eight months. The firm shipped about 1.3 million large-sized panels (up 4.3% sequentially) and 1.61 million medium-sized (up 64.5%) panels in August.

Industry insiders explained that the revenue growths in August were due mainly to the increasing demand from the LCD TV application because the traditional high season is coming while the downstream inventory has underwent about four months of clearance.
