Taipei, July 2, 2009 (CENS)--Thanks to popularity of netbook PCs, Taiwan-based Acer Inc., now the world`s third-largest brand of notebook PC, posted overall notebook PC shipment of 7.39 million units in the first quarter of this year and commanded a global market share of 11.1%, only trailing Dell by 2.1 percentage points, according to the latest report issued by iSuppli.
The report showed that the global shipment of PCs reached 72.3 million units in the first quarter of this year, down 14.4% from a quarter earlier or 8.1% from a year earlier, due mainly to sluggish demand for desktop models, which declined 23% annually in shipment in the quarter.
In the quarter, HP led with a total shipment of 13.06 million PCs and a global market share of 19.7%, followed by the runner-up Dell with 8.75 million units and 13.2%. Noteworthy is that Dell suffered the steepest decline of 18.7% in its PC shipment in the quarter among world`s top 5 PC brands, according to iSuppli.
In the meantime, another report issued by Gartner even showed that Acer and Dell scored a 12.8% and 13% share, respectively, of the global market for PCs in the first quarter, representing a margin of only a 0.2 of one percentage point. This has effectively enhanced its chairman J.T. Wang`s confidence of unseating Dell as the world`s No. 2 in the near future. Also, Acer actively aims to challenge HP`s leading position next year.
In fact, the current situation is quite favorable to Acer, mainly because the firm has focused its sales in the European and Asian markets for years and, fortunately, fended off the declining consumer market in the U.S., where the global financial tsunami started. In contrast, Dell, zeroing in on the U.S. market, has been plagued by sales declines for months. Therefore, institutional investors generally believe that Acer`s ambition to advance to the second place in the line will likely come true.
