Taiwan's FPD Production Value to Slightly Rise in Q2: IEK-ITIS

2010/06/07 | By Quincy Liang

Taipei, June 7, 2010 (CENS)--The flat panel display (FPD) industry in Taiwan turned out production values totaling US$11.97 billion in the first quarter of 2010, a 2.4% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) decline but a 67.5% year-on-year (YoY) increase, according to the IEK-ITIS (Industry & Technology Intelligence Services) in Taiwan.

FPDs made up US$8.2 billion to the total production value, a 5.5% QoQ decline but a 67.1% YoY increase, with FPD parts and components contributing US$3.77 billion, a QoQ increase of 5.3% and YoY of 68.4%.

Large-sized (over 10 inches) thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) contributed US$6.9 billion to the overall production value (down 3.4% QoQ but up 85.1% YoY), while small- and medium-sized TFT-LCDs US$1.06 billion, down 15% QoQ, up 20.3% YoY, TN/super twisted nematic (STN)-LCDs US$170.6 million, down 22% QoQ and down 22.7% YoY, and organic light-emit diode (OLED) US$61.56 million, up 2.1% QoQ and up 7.6% YoY.

Among FPD parts and components, color filters accounted for US$952.5 million, down 6.2% QoQ, up 86.1% YoY, polarizers for US$402.8 million, up 10.9% QoQ, up 45.5% YoY, glass substrates US$1.27 billion, up 7.8% QoQ, up 58.3% YoY, and backlight modules US$1.1 billion, up 11.8% QoQ, up 76.8% YoY.

The IEK-ITIS says that the production value of large-sized TFT-LCD panels slid modestly from the previous quarter in the first quarter, a traditional low season, due mainly to low parts inventory at downstream makers in the fourth quarter of 2009 that drove aggressive panel pull-in and panel-price hikes in the first quarter.

IEK-ITIS forecast that in the second quarter the overall FPD production value would grow 3.23% QoQ to about US$12.35 billion. Backlight module is expected to be a big moneymaker in the second quarter, due to the rapidly increasing penetration of LED backlight modules, generating an quarterly production value of US$1.45 billion, up about 30% QoQ.
