2014/11/26 | By Steve Chuang

Profiting from eco-awareness that steadily drives popularity of cycling globally, Taiwan-based Giant Manufacturing Co., Ltd., the island's largest bicycle maker and vendor by global market share, saw cumulative EPS (earnings per share) for the first nine months of this year hit a record high of NT$8.18 (US$0.27), according to its latest financial report.

The report shows Jan.-Sept. consolidated revenue and net profits of NT$46.034 billion (US$1.53 billion) and NT$3.073 billion (US$102.43 million), respectively, up 9.3% and 16.1% year-on-year (YoY).

In Q3 or seasonal peak of the industry, the company raked in NT$16.697 billion (US$556.56 million) in consolidated revenue, up 11% YoY, with net profits  surging 24% YoY to NT$1.15 billion (US$38.33 million), and EPS beating a single-quarterly high of NT$3.06.

As Q4 is typically a high season, institutional investors generally believe Giant will continue to see sales grow in the quarter and finish 2014 with EPS of over NT$10.

Giant commented that it totally produced 4.96 million conventional bicycles and electric models during Jan.-Sept., with global sales of “Giant” brand products also showing robust growth.

By regional markets, the firm noted that its branded sales were mostly recorded in Europe and North America during the said period, while subsidiaries in Japan, Taiwan and Korea also posted solid performance to contribute to  profits, with, after three years of explosive growth, sales in China having leveled off for now.

With new models for sale in 2015 continually debuted and receiving accolades worldwide, Giant aims to step up promoting its sub-brand Liv, unveiled as the world's first female-friendly brand at this year's Eurobike, a bicycle trade fair held Aug. 27-30 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. (SC)
