Taiwan's Machinery Exports Grow 53.6% in First Nine Months of 2010

Taipei, Dec. 2, 2010 (CENS)--Taiwan exported US$12.382 billion of machinery in the first three quarters of 2010, for an annual growth of 53.6%, according to customs-cleared statistics compiled by the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI).

Machine tools led in exports with value reaching US$2.097 billion in the first three quarters, up 65.5%. Plastics and rubber processing machinery followed with US$855.59 million, up 63.6%. Special-purpose machinery was third with US$818.02 million, up 65.5%.

China led ast the biggest export outlet by absorbing US$4.21 billion of Taiwan-made machinery in the first three quarters, surging 97.3% year-on-year for 34% of the total exports. The U.S. followed with US$1.807 billion, up 30.2% for a 14.6% share. Japan ranked third with US$654.58 million, up 18% for 5.3%.

The TAMI's tallies also show Taiwan imported US$19.536 billion of machinery in the first three quarters, up 94.8% year-on-year.

Machinery for semiconductors and integrated circuits were the biggest imports with value of US$9.524 billion, up 183.5% for 48.8% of the total imports. Special-purpose machinery followed with US$1.668 billion, up 79.8% for a 8.5% share. Pumps, compressors and fans were third with US$887.14 million, up 69.7% and commanding in 4.5%.

TAMI president C.C. Wang noted Taiwan still relies on Japan, the U.S., China and Germany for the imports of machinery. The TAMI's tallies show Japan as the island's largest supplier by selling US$7.815 billion of machinery to Taiwan in the first three quarters, up 87.2% year-on-year and accounting for 40% of the total imports. The U.S. followed with US$4.273 billion, up 127% and commanding 21.9%. China and Hong Kong together ranked third with US$1.725 billion, up 58.5% and commanding 8.8%.
