Taiwan Machinery Exports Total US$8.647 B. in First Five Months

Taipei, Aug. 5, 2011 (CENS)--The Taiwan machinery industry exported US$8.647 billion in products in the first five months, up 35.9% year-on-year, according to statistics compiled by the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI).

Machine tools led with export value totaling US$1.581 billion in the first five months, up 53.6% year-on-year, with plastics and rubber processing machinery trailing in second with US$566.87 million, up 31.9%, and special-purpose machinery at third place with US$539.66 million, up 29.9%.

China led as the biggest buyer by absorbing US$3.11 billion in Taiwan-made machinery in the first five months, up 49.6% year-on-year to account for 36% of total exports. The U.S. was second with US$1.193 billion, up 21.2% year-on-year to take 13.8%. Japan was in third place with US$474.21 million, up 40.6% to take 5.5%.

Other major export outlets, in descending order, were Thailand, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Germany, South Korea, Malaysia, Turkey, Brazil, Singapore, the Netherlands, Italy, United Kingdom, the Philippines, Canada, Australia, Russia, France, Mexico, United Arab Emirates and Spain.

The TAMI's tallies also show Taiwan imported US$1.194 billion in machinery in the first five months of 2011, up 18.2% from a year earlier.

Machinery for integrated circuits and semiconductors was the biggest import category with value reaching US$5.864 billion, up 16.6% year-on-year to account for 49.1% of total imports. Special-purpose machines was in second place with US$601.57 million, down 28% to take 5% share of total imports. Pumps, compressors and fans was in third place with US$585.14 million, up 21.9% and commanding 4.9%.

Japan was Taiwan's largest import supplier by shipping US$4.209 billion in machinery to Taiwan in the first five months, up 1.8% year-on-year to take 35.2% of total imports. The U.S. was in second place with US$2.415 billion, up 8.3% and commanding 20.2%. China and Hong Kong was in third place with US$1.006 billion, up 12.3% and commanding 8.4%. Germany ranked fourth with US$1.005 billion, up 44.8% and accounting for 8.4%.

Other major import suppliers, in descending order, were South Korea, Switzerland, Italy, United Kingdom, and France.
