Asus Advances to World's No.4 NB Brand in Q4, 2013
2014/02/10 | By Steve ChuangDriven by its hot-selling T100 Transformer Book laptop, Asus shipped some five million notebook PCs in Q4, 2013, outstripping its Taiwanese counterpart, Acer, to be the world's fourth-largest brand, according to the statistics released by WitsView Technology Corp., a Taiwan-headquartered market research firm.
WitsView's statistics show that global notebook PC shipment totaled about 46 million units in the quarter, up 4.7% from the third quarter, of which HP contributed 8 million units to command the largest share of 17.4% as the No.1 brand, followed by Lenovo and Dell, who shipped 7.4 million and 5.3 million units, respectively, to hold 16% and 11.6% of the market, as No.2 and No.3.
Asus scored the strongest quarterly growth of 41.3% among the top five brands with shipment of five million units, for a 10.8% share to rank No.4, while Acer shipped 4.2 million units for a 3.3% quarterly growth and a 9.2% share as the fifth-largest brand, according to WitsView.
While Asus enjoys brisk growth, there are still no positive signs of recovery for Acer, which has been mired in continuing downturn beginning in mid-2012, when its ex-CEO Gianfranco Lanci departed. According to another market research firm, International Data Corp., Acer saw its PC shipment in Asia Pacific plummet 27.6% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of last year, with a market share of 7.2%, only 0.2 of a percentage point higher than the fifth-ranked Asus.
