Heavyweight Manufacturers Co-open Cross-Strait IOT Alliance

Taipei, July 21, 2010 (CENS)--Big hitters of information-communications technology industry in Taiwan and mainland China have recently co-opened an Internet of Things (IOT) alliance, which has secured participation pledge with more iconic manufacturers on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits.

Alliance co-founders include Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., Taiwan Mobile Corp., Far EasTone Telecom Co., Ltd., Vibo Telecom Co. and Asia Pacific Telecom Co., Ltd. of Taiwan and China Mobile Ltd., China Unicom Ltd., China Telecom Corp. Ltd., Huawei Technology Co., Ltd., ZTE Corp., Datang Telecom Technology Co., Ltd., and Newland Group of mainland China.

Participation pledge has been made by Taiwan's iconic ICT manufacturers including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC), United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., Epistar Corp., Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd., and Largan Precision Co., Ltd.

Alliance members elected GS1 Taiwan Chief Executive Huei Lin the alliance's first-term chairman. Lin stressed that the alliance's long-term goal is to connect Taiwan's industry chains with the mainland's in order to help facilitate the development of the IOT project included in the mainland's 12th Five-Year Plan as well as Taiwan's and the mainland's IOT industries push into the market in the United States, European Union, South Korea and Japan.

Taiwan's market-consulting organizations estimated the mainland's radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless sensor industries, both crucial to the development of IOT, to generate combined revenue of RMB10 billion (US$1.4 billion at US$1:NT$6.7 RMB) this year, helping bring revenue of the mainland's IOT industry beyond the RMB100 billion (US$14.9 billion) benchmark. In 2015, the mainland's IOT industry is estimated to have revenue of RMB250 billion (US$37 billion).
