2010/08/10 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, Aug. 10, 2010 (CENS)--With its hot-sellers fueling shipment, Taiwan-based High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), a world-caliber vendor of smartphones, commanded a 7.6% share of the global market for the products in the second quarter of this year, crossing the 5% level for the first time, according to International Data Corp. (IDC)

IDC's newest report shows that global shipment of smartphones totaled 63 million units in the second quarter of this year, sharply up 50% from 41.9 million shipped during the same period of last year. The global shipment of smartphones came to 118 million units in the first half of the year, soaring 54% from 76.8 million units of a year earlier.

Worth mentioning is that increasing popularity of Android-based phones has helped to drive the growth of global shipment this year. Citing U.S.'s smartphone market, IDC indicates that sales of Android phones have averaged at around 200,000 a day as hot-selling models in the market, significantly benefiting a couple of handset vendors focusing promotion on such phones.

IDC noted that four out of the world's top 10 brands, namely HTC, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, all witnessed their respective shipment in the second quarter of this year double from the last second quarter, as they concentrated on Android phones. This attests to increasing influence of the handset operating system in the industry.

In the quarter, Nokia remained the world's largest smartphone brand with a market share of 38.1%, trailed by RIM and Apple with 17.8% and 13.3%, respectively. Shipping 4.8 million units to command a 7.6% share, HTC held the fourth place in the world, keeping ahead of Samsung, which ranked No. 5 with shipment of 3 million units and a global market share of 4.8% in the second quarter.
