Nanya Technology Names New Chairman From Another Affiliate

2008/04/02 | By Judy Li

Taipei, April 2, 2008 (CENS)--Nanya Technology Corp., an affiliate of Formosa Plastics Group and an innovator in DRAM design, manufacturing and sales, recently announced that Wu Chia-chao, president of Nan Ya Plastics Corp., also an affiliate of Formosa Plastics Group, to become its new chairman to replace Wu Chin-jen as the latter has been too busy as chief executive of the Group's other affiliates.

Wu Chin-jen succeeded Y. C. Wang, the founder of Formosa Plastics Group, to assume the position as chairman of Nanya Technology in August of 2006 and has since been very busy with the Group's high-tech sectors since he had been chairman of Nan Ya PCB Co. and Inotera Memories, Inc., the Group's two other electronic firms. Beginning this month, Wu will have quit Nanya Technology chairmanship so he can put more effort in the said two electronic firms.

In March of this year, Nanya Technology announced to ally with Micron Technology Inc., a U.S.-based memory chip producer, to jointly establish a company on the island for the development of 50-nano 'stack' DRAM in replace of the existing 'trench' DRAM.

At the initial stage, Nanya Technology and Micron Technology will generate 'stack' DRAM chips at Nanya's 12" wafer factory here, which currently can turn out a total of 27,000 'trench' DRAM chips per month. The detail of the two parties' manufacturing cooperation for the fabrication of 'stack' DRAM chips will not be finalized until in the second quarter of the year.

Besides, Nanya Technology's two 8" wafer factories are reportedly to also cooperate with Micron Technology to generate NAND flash products or undertake subcontract for wafers. The said two 8" wafer factories can each produce about 70,000 chips a month.

Influenced by the sluggish global demand for DRAM, last year Nanya Technology witnessed after-tax net loss of NT$12.481 billion (US$390.03 million at US$1 = NT$32) or negative earning per share (EPS) of NT$2.66 (US$0.083). However, the company believed that it is expected to see better business, and the price of DRAM chips might go up this month.
