TPV Aims for LCD TV Shipment of 9 M. Units Next Year

2008/11/13 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, Nov. 13, 2008 (CENS)--After landing LG's order for 2 million LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, TPV Technology Ltd., a globally leading supplier of the products, projects its annual shipment to reach 9 million units next year, according to company sources.

Taiwan's Topology Research Institute (TRI) noted that with the global market for LCD TVs continuously growing, Taiwanese makers' shipments are estimated at a total of 25.9 million units in 2009, up 27% from 20.44 million units projected for 2008. The growth rate, however, will decline from the corresponding figure of 36% for 2008, due partly to smaller brands suffering sales declines worldwide and partly to Korean brands tending to cut outsourced production.

Among the top 5 Taiwanese LCD TV makers, only TPV, Wistron Corp. and Compal Electronics Inc. are expected to enjoy a growth of over 50% as posted for their annual shipments. As Qisda Corp. plans to gradually withdraw from the market, TVP, in addition to orders from international large-sized brands as Philips ad Sharp, has landed a big order from LG for 2 million LCD TVs, which is expected to push up its annual shipment to an estimate of 9 million units for 2009.

On the other hand, Wistron has served as the largest subcontractor of LCD TVs for Sony, and the firm projects its annual shipmen to hit 3.5 million units next year, while Compal, after confirming orders from Toshiba and Hitachi, is to challenge annual shipment of 2.8 million units in the year.

In the meantime, AmTran Technology Co., Ltd. expects to ship about 2.8 million LCD TVs next year, up 14% from this year. Proview Electronics Co. conservatively forecasts its shipment to rise only 9% to 2.5 million units. Innolux Display Corp. is expected to ship about 1.5 million units.

TRI analysts indicated that continuous price drops of display panels will lead ASP (average selling price) of LCD TVs to spiral downward by 15-20% this year, and this will help to boost a penetration rate of the products in emerging countries to 42% next year from 30% this year. Besides, global shipment is also expected to surge 25% from a year earlier to hit 126 million units in 2009.

Huge consumer demand for LCD TVs in emerging countries has piqued large-sized brands' interest to deploy business operations there, with IPS Alpha, a joint venture between Panasonic and Hitachi, announcing a plan to build a TV panel module plant for JPY900 million in Malaysia starting the end of this November. The new plant is expected to turn out 50,000 units of pale modules a month for downstream makers in Asian countries.
