2009/02/17 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, Feb. 17, 2009 (CENS)--Optoma Technology Inc., a globally leading brand of projectors, successfully unseated Epson of Japan as No. 1 brand in the Taiwan market for projectors in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to industry sources.

Optoma is a reinvested company by Coretronic Corp., a leading Taiwanese supplier of projection and display solutions, and promotes projectors under own brand Optoma worldwide. Focusing on DLP (digital light processing) chip-based projectors, the brand has been the largest in the segment for several years. However, in overall sales, the brand is the second-largest, still trailing Epson in the world.

Kuo Te-li, general manager of Optoma in charge of business operations in Asian markets, said that his company last year sold a total of 425,000 DLP projectors worldwide, up 14.5% from 371,000 units posted a year earlier. He added that his firm is planning to attain a 20% sales growth in Asian markets this year by launching new PK101 series pocket projectors and another two high-end 1080p projectors, namely HD82 for home theater devices and EP1080 for professional use, in Taiwan, ambitiously aiming to command a share of 40% of the market this year.

According to industry insiders, global shipments of 1080p projectors are expected to grow by 206% in 2008 through 2011, and, Kuo opined, such models will surpass 720p models in global shipment this year as the mainstream in the projector market.
