Alcatel-Lucent Helps Elitegroup and VIA Explore WiMAX Business

2009/02/27 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, Feb. 27, 2009 (CENS)--Taiwan-based Elitegroup Computer Systems Co. and VIA Technologies Inc. are both going to explore WiMAX (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) business, and their WiMAX notebook PCs and WiMAX-EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution) dual-mode handsets have been certified by Alcatel-Lucent for export to Cambodia, according to company sources.

Since setting up its WiMAX IOT (interoperability testing) lab in Taiwan, Alcatel-Lucent has received 24 WiMAX-related products from eight Taiwanese suppliers for certification within a year. Due mainly to Taiwanese makers having formed an integrated supply chain of WiMAX-based applications on the island, Alcatel-Lucent has landed orders from Chuan Wei, a Cambodian WiMAX operator, according to Larry Chai, general manager of Alcatel-Lucent Taiwan branch.

In addition to Cambodian companies, Delta Telia of Georgian Republic and scores of telecom companies from different countries have shown interest in purchasing CPE (customer premise equipment), such as USB receivers, outdoor and indoor terminal devices and WiMAX-based Netbook PCs, produced by Taiwanese makers in cooperation with Alcatel-Lucent. This will assure Taiwanese makers huge profits in the future.

So far, Alcatel-Lucent noted, Accton Technology Corp., Zyxel Communications Corp. and Quanta Microsystems Inc. have been certified to meet SIACE standards, and so will be a number of Taiwanese network devices and electronics makers soon. Plus, the firm will keep focusing on development of WiMAX technologies and related applications, including LTE (Long Term Evolution).

Worth mentioning is that Taiwan's mature development of WiMAX technologies has also attracted Huawei Corp. of China, the world's third-largest communication solutions and equipment supplier now, to consider establishing an IOT lab on the island. At present, D-Link Corp., Alpha Networks Inc. and Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. are all going to vie for contract orders from the firm's downstream clients.
