MiTAC Aims for World's No. 2 Maker of Military-grade NB PCs
2009/06/15 | By Quincy LiangTaipei, June 15, 2009 (CENS)--MiTAC Technology Corp., a major information technology (IT) hardware maker and supplier of military-grade portable devices, recently announced its aim to become the world's second-largest supplier of military-use IT equipment in four years, when the firm will trail only Matsushita of Japan.
MiTAC Technology began cutting its contract-production volume of general notebook PCs to international brands three years ago to gradually shift its focus to military-specification notebook PCs, for their margin is as high as 45%, though the production mode has to be small-batch, large-variety.
The production shift has been quite fruitful, for Mitac Technology's earnings per share (EPS) was NT$2.4 (US$0.08 at US$1: NT$32.5), not inferior to first-class contract notebook manufacturers.
James Hwang, Mitac Technology's president, said that his company would continue to raise production of military-grade notebook PCs from about 30% in 2008 to as much as 40% this year, with such effort expected to lead to a 20% to 30% year-on-year (YoY) unconsolidated-revenue growth this year.
According to Mitac Technology, it now has a 5% share in the global military notebook PC market, or the No. 3 position, and the maker aims to narrow the gap with the No. 2 Matsushita, who now has a 60% global share.
Mitac Technology unveiled its military-grade personal digital assistant (PDA) models at the just-ended 2009 Computex Taipei. Huang said that his company has been producing military-grade products for more than 10 years and its Getak brand is very famous. The president is confident that military PDAs will be the latest product line with highest growth potential.
