TPV May Withdraw LCD Orders From Chi Mei
2009/11/16 | By Philip LiuTaipei, Nov. 16, 2009 (CENS)--Faced with the vigorous onset of its archrival Innolux Display, of Hon Hai Group, following its acquisition of Chi Mei Optoelectronics, Taiwan's second largest TFT LCD (thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal-) display, TPV Technology, the world's leading contract maker for LCD monitor and TV, may transfer its orders from Chi Mei to other suppliers, including LGD, AU Optronics, and Samsung, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN), sister publication of Taiwan Economic News (TEN).
TPV is likely to make the changeover, since the acquisition of Chi Mei has greatly strengthened Hong Hai's hands in achieving its avowed goal of overtaking TPV to become the world's leading supplier of both LCD monitor and TV assembly.
Meanwhile, Chi Mei will inevitably break its alliance relationship with TPV by selling off its 7% stake in the later. Presently, Chi Mei is the third largest shareholder of TPV, trailing China's Great Wall Group at 27.02% and Philips.
TPV is shipping 2.79 million LCD TVs a month, the largest among Taiwanese contract TV makers, and counts the world's leading TV brands, such as Philips and Sony, among its clients. Meanwhile, it is shipping over 3 million LCD monitors a month, slightly higher than Innolux.
