D-Link, Quanta Team Up to Tap 3G Mobile Router Biz

2009/12/10 | By Quincy Liang

Taipei, Dec. 10, 2009 (CENS)--Taiwan's D-Link Corp., a global leader in connectivity for enterprise business networking, and Quanta Computer Inc., one of the world's largest notebook PC contract manufacturers, have jointly launched two mobile 3G (third-generation) wideband router models, developed by the former and manufactured by the latter, to explore lucrative business opportunities in the rapidly rising 3G market.

D-Link has been a major player in wireless local area network (WLAN) networking card, router, telecom switch, and family networking products, and the company has been actively trying to diversify into the 3G-related fields.

The networking equipment vendor began adopting an open-supplier strategy from this year by outsourcing production to its long-term contract producers in Taiwan and new suppliers on the both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Industry sources said D-Link, for the first time, turns to a professional EMS (electronics manufacturing services) provider instead of specialized networking equipment suppliers for the supply of 3G products so as to cut costs.

The D-Link 3G mobile router meets mobile users' need for setting up a wireless network on-the-go to share an Internet connection. The mobile router enables users to quickly create a secure wireless 802.11g (108G) network and provide access to the Internet using a cellular signal. By connecting an Internet PC card to the 3G mobile router, an Internet connection can be accessed and shared virtually anywhere within a wireless broadband network with other users. After a full charge, the mobile router can offer three hours of use with its own battery power.
