Acer to Launch Ultrathin NB PC This Year
2010/02/11 | By Steve ChuangTaipei, Feb. 11, 2010 (CENS)--Acer Inc., the world's second-largest PC brand now, is going to launch an ultrathin notebook PC, which is only 1.9cm thick (the same as Apple Inc.'s Macbook Air), as its ace in the hole to challenge HP's No. 1 position in the global market this year, according to the brand.
With excellent R&D capability, Acer last year worked out the world's first CULV (consumer ultra low voltage) platform-based laptop, Timeline, which is 2.54cm thick, sells for only NT$30,000 per unit and has proven popular with consumers.
However, considering that CULV-based laptops are moderate in performance and not the thinnest in the market, Acer has decided to develop and launch a truly ultrathin, beefed-up laptop this year, which, still under development now, will adopt Intel's newest Capella ULV processors and can be comparable with conventional notebook PCs in performance.
Acer shipped about 31 million notebook PCs worldwide last year, and plans to raise the figure to 40 million units this year, aiming to outpace HP as the world's No. 1 notebook PC brand.
The brand unseated Dell as the world's second-largest notebook PC brand last year with a slate of high-profile products, including CULV-based laptops and notebook PCs with Dolby cinematic surround.
