Taiwanese TV Brands to Explore Domestic LED-backlit LCD TV Market

2010/04/07 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, April 7, 2010 (CENS)--In response to increasing popularity of LED (light emitting diode)-backlit LCD TVs, several Taiwanese TV brands, including Vizio, Tatung, Teco and Sampo, are going to launch their own-brand models to cash in on great sales potential in Taiwan's consumer market in the second half of this year.

International large-sized brands as Sony, Sharp, LG and Samsung have actively promoted LED-backlit LCD TVs this year, making such products one of the biggest hits with consumers. According to DisplaySearch, global shipment of LCD TVs is estimated at 180 million units in 2010, with LED-backlit models to account for 35 million units, almost 10 times the figure of 3.5 million units sold in 2009. Unsurprisingly, the rise of the high-end, profitable products has also driven Taiwanese brands to launch their models.

For example, Amtran Technology Co., Ltd. will take advantage of its U.S.-based sales arm Vizio to release LED-backlit LCD TVs this year and plans to rank among the top three brands in Taiwan's LCD TV market within three years. Last year, the firm succeeded in tapping the Taiwanese market with Vizio-branded large-sized LCD TVs in cooperation with a local wholesaler and distributor.

In the meantime, Tatung Co., a leading Taiwanese brand of household appliances, has already launched 22-inch LED-backlit LCD TVs in Taiwan, which sell for less than NT$10,000 (about US$312 at US$1: NT$32) per unit and has proven popular with consumers. The brand will unveil larger-sized models in the coming months, aiming to achieve annual LCD TV sales of 150,000 units as the top-two in the market this year.
