SYM in Taiwan to Apply for E-Scooter Subsidy
2010/09/24 | By Quincy LiangFollowing other local counterparts as Kwang Yang Motor Co., Ltd. (KYMCO), China Motor Corp. (CMC), E-Ton etc., Taiwan's powered two-wheeler (PTW) maker Sanyang Industry Co., Ltd. (SYM) plans to apply for the official subsidy for electric-scooters.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) etc. have been evaluating similar subsidies for the offshore islands.
The testing units qualifying e-scooters for such subsidies said that some models have difficulty climbing knolls on the offshore islands.
To help promote e-scooters in Taiwan, the government is studying a subsidy program to give US$250 to US$344 for each e-scooter sold. In addition, the EPA also subsidizes each rider US$94 who replaces an old two-stroke PTW with an e-scooter, with some city and county governments having also begun to subsidize e-scooter purchases.
The Taiwan Cabinet has chosen four offshore islands, including Green Island, Kinmen, Penghu, Liuqiu, to be the focus of its "low-carbon islands" policy. Green Island, for example, is expected to create demand for over 10,000 e-scooters.
