HTC Ranks Among World's Top 10 Handset Brands for 1st Time in Q2

2010/08/18 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, Aug. 18, 2010 (CENS)--The Taiwan-based High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), a world-caliber vendor of smartphones, commanded a 1.8% share of the global market for handsets with shipment of 5.91 million units as the eighth-largest brand in the second quarter of this year, entering the world's top 10 brands list for the first time, according to Gartner.

Gartner's report shows that global sales of handsets increased by 13.8% to 325 million units in the second quarter of this year from one year earlier, with smartphones accounting for 61.6 million units of the total, 50.5% more than a quarter earlier. However, as some brands, like Nokia, Samsung and LG, have actively promoted low-priced phones, ASPs (average selling prices) of handsets were lower than expected in the quarter.

Thanks to its hot-sellers, including Incredible, Desire, Legend and Evo, fueling sales growth, HTC shipped over 5.9 million smartphones in the second quarter, sharply surging 140% from a year earlier to make its first debut on the world's top 10 brand list.

As smartphones is getting popular with consumers, institutional investors indicate that HTC is likely to achieve its shipment goal of 6.5 million units to hold its No. 8 position in the world in the third quarter, as material shortages that have plagued the brand for a time are solved.

In fact, HTC, which unveiled the world's first Android phone two years ago and has focused promotion on such phones, has also benefited from increasing popularity of Android. Gartner notes that Android phones accounted for a 17.2% of the global total, making the smartphone operating system the third-popular in the world, as well as the most in the U.S., in the second quarter of the year.
