Held June 5-10 in the Brno Exhibition Center, this year's event occupied six large halls and outdoor venues, where 357 exhibitors from 14 countries were present as well as tens of other companies, who debuted vehicles in the Classic Show and Motorsport Expo, for a departure from the main theme.

The sputtering global recovery impacted the turnout of carmakers, without significantly affecting the representation of exhibitors in the other segments. The six-day show drew 78,000 visitors, with foreign visitors coming from 41 nations, mainly Slovakia, Poland, Italy, Germany and Hungary.

The showstoppers were the premieres of various trucks: the Tatra 810 for civilian purposes; Iveco's emission-free Daily Electric; and Avia's new Smith Newton; and the first 6-12 ton electric-drive trucks.

Various innovative buses were also shown. Iveco Irisbus displayed a three-axle long-distance coach Magelys HDH with glazed roof panels, as well as the new city low-floor, CNG-driven bus Citelis. SOR Libchavy showed two prototypes: the city electrobus EBN 10.5, designed for the Ostrava Transport Enterprise; and the hybrid-drive articulated bus NBH 18 to run in Prague. The Polish company Solaris Bus & Coach exhibited its low-floor bus Solaris 12 Urbino with parallel diesel-electric drive, and the inter-city bus InterUrbino to be commercially launched within six months.

Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition

Organized by Guangzhou Guangya Messe Frankfurt Co., Ltd., the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition (GILE) is a leading and comprehensive lighting event in Asia.

“The Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition is much more than a trading hub,” explains Jason Cao, general manager of Messe Frankfurt in China. “It's the meeting place for the world's lighting industry. Key players in the global lighting industry are attracted by the vast range of lighting products technology and services assembled in Asia, together with our highly respected supplementary programs.”

This year the 15th edition, held June 9-12 at the Guangzhou International Convention & Exhibition Center, attracted over 1,800 exhibitors, including first-time pavilions from Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States.

Three major global lighting suppliers set up branded pavilions, including Osram (Germany), Philips (the Netherlands), Everlight (Taiwan) and GE Lighting (the U.S.); while the LED pavilions featured industry leaders like Cree Inc. (the U.S.), Nichia (Japan), Oasistek (Taiwan), Rohm (Japan) and Seoul Semiconductor (South Korea).

“As Asia's most reputable trading hub and marketing platform, we offer one venue where visitors and exhibitors can gain a comprehensive overview of what's happening in both the Asian and global lighting industries,” Cao says.

LED & Green Lighting Expo

Debuting in 2003, the LED & Green Lighting Expo is today regarded as an important lighting event in South Korea.

Industry experts say that light emitting diode or LED has been around for over 30 years and once used only for indicator lights. Technological breakthroughs in recent years are helping to develop energy-efficient solid state lighting, which use high brightness light emitting diodes (HB LEDs) as light source to replace conventional incandescent and fluorescent lamps.

The majority of solid-state lighting applications to date have involved colored light. Beyond indicator lights, typical applications include automotive brake lights, traffic signals, exit signs, and flashlights. However, white LEDs, introduced in the late 1990s, have made tremendous progress in efficiency and lumen output, so white LEDs are now poised to enter the US$12 billion market for general illumination, also casting the South Korean event in a promising light.

The LED & Green Lighting Expo 2010, held June 22-25 at the Korea Int'l Exhibition Center, presented wide ranging LED lighting and devices, including wafers, chips, modules, back light units, signs, digital information displays, solid-state lighting, lighting fixtures, flat panel displays etc.

The four-day event attracted 20,159 visitors, of which 840 were foreigners, with 588 or 70% coming mainly from Asia, and the remaining from Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East.

CENS sent a local representative to promote its publications, with CENS Lighting drawing considerable attention among visitors and buyers.

Vietnam Auto & Petrol

Vietnam Auto & Petrol 2010, held June 23-27 at the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center, Ho Chi Minh City, is a leading international event for transport/automobiles and services sectors in Vietnam.

With a growing economy and rising car and PTW ownerships, Vietnam also attracts the highest foreign direct investment (FDI) among ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states, proving to be an inviting business and investment destination for suppliers of vehicles, services and supporting products.

With 86 million people and a stable economy, Vietnam has nearly one million automobiles of all kinds and approximately 26 million PTWs, whereby good potential exists for local and foreign businesses to capitalize on rising demand for personal mobility.

Despite the global economic meltdown, car sales in Vietnam have risen; while demand for buses, trucks and special-purpose vehicles will also surge to serve growing needs to move goods and people.

And opportunities are widely available to those interested to join supplying parts, accessories and equipment to the emerging car-making sector in Vietnam.

Vietnam Auto & Petrol 2010 covered automobiles, motorcycles, parts & accessories as well as equipment, machinery and services, offering opportunities to exhibitors intending to expand business to Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

InterPlas Thailand

The 19th annual InterPlas Thailand, held June 24-27 at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Center, is seen as a leading international plastic and rubber machinery exposition in Thailand with widespread recognition in Asia.

The four-day event drew 1,300 exhibitors under 350 leading brands from 25 countries, including Australia, China, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States, who showcased the newest manufacturing machinery and technologies.

The show in Bangkok gathered a sizable manufacturing community of 35,823 industrialists, including 120 business delegations from 42 countries, but mainly ASEAN members.

The degree of activity, buzz and foot traffic reflected full confidence in the plastic and rubber machinery market in Thailand, with the event bustling with activities and reportedly many deals sealed. The special features and supplementary activities also helped attendants to broaden horizons and build new contacts.

CENS promoted a variety of trade magazines at its booth, with Taiwan Machinery and Taiwan Industrial Suppliers being sought after among the visitors.
