Taipei, March 7, 2011 (CENS)--Taiwan exported US$154 million of assembled bicycles in January 2011, up 6.94% year-on-year (YoY), according to Taiwan Bicycle Exporters' Association (TBEA).

Thanks to the appreciation of NT dollar against greenback, the export ASP of Taiwan-made bicycles reached US$347, another record high from US$297.2 set in 2010 and a 16.94% increase from last year's average.

Tony Lo, chairman of TBEA and president of world's largest assembled-bike maker Giant Manufacturing Co., Ltd., said that Taiwan exported 443,900 assembled bicycles in January, down 8.55% YoY due to bad weather in Europe. Exports to the European Union (EU) declined 22.04% YoY in January, but that to North America rose 54.66% YoY to 70,900 units.

Lo said that Taiwan's bicycle industry is expected to grow steadily in 2011, but reminded local makers to be wary of fluctuating raw-material prices and currency exchange rates.

In 2010, Taiwan exported 5.06 million assembled bicycles, up 17.6% from the previous year, for export value of US$1.5 billion, a 20.3% YoY increase. The 2010 assembled-bike export ASP was US$297.2, up 2.29% YoY. The largest export markets for Taiwan-made assembled bicycles last year were the EU (3.5 million units), up 25.67%, for an export value of US$792 million, a 26.8% increase.
