Taiwan's Machinery Exports Surge 33.8% YoY in H1

Taipei, Sept. 5, 2011 (CENS)--Taiwan exported US$10.428 billion of general machinery in the first half of 2011, for a 33.8% year-on-year growth, according to customs-cleared statistics compiled by the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI).

Machine tools was the largest export category with value reaching US$1.91 billion, up 50.4% from a year earlier, followed by plastics and rubber processing machinery with export value of US$677.09 million, up 26.8%, and special-purpose machines at US$648.47 million, up 26%.

China led as the biggest export buyer by absorbing US$3.733 billion of Taiwan-made machinery in the first half of 2011, up 44.4% from a year earlier to account for 35.8% of total exports, followed by the U.S. with US$1.458 billion, up 22% to account for 14%, and Japan with US$575.07 million, up 39.9% and commanding 5.5%.

Other major export outlets, in descending order, were Thailand, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Germany, South Korea, Malaysia, Turkey, Brazil, Singapore, the Netherlands, Italy, United Kingdom, and the Philippines.

The TAMI's tallies also show that Taiwan imported US$14.236 billion of machinery in the first half of 2011, up 16.9% from a year earlier.

The largest import category was machinery for integrated circuits and semiconductors with value reaching US$6.871 billion in the first half, up 14.8% year-on-year to account for 48.3% of total import, followed by special-purpose machinery at US$727.886 million, down 29% and commanding 5.1%, and pumps, fans and compressors at US$720.023 million, up 23.6% and accounting for 5.1%.

Japan led as the major supplier by selling US$5.078 billion to machinery to Taiwan in the first half, up 3.5% year-on-year to account for 35.7% of total import value, followed by the U.S. at US$2.806 billion, up 6.9% and commanding 19.7%, and Hong Kong and China at US$1.24 billion, up 11.7% to account for 8.7%.

Other major suppliers, in descending order, were Germany, South Korea, Switzerland, Italy, United Kingdom, and France.
