Taiwan, China to Set Common Standards for Functional Textiles and Windturbines

2012/01/09 | By Ben Shen

Taipei, Jan.9, 2012 (CENS)--Taiwan will cooperate with China to introduce common standards for functional textiles and medium- and small-sized vertical-shaft windturbines, which will help domestic manufacturers to tap into China's domestic-demand business opportunities, said Chen Jay-san, director general of the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI), Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Chen said domestic manufacturers have competitive edge on such products as LED (light emitting diode) road lamps, medium- and small-sized vertical-shaft windturbines, and functional textiles. The creation of common standards across the Taiwan Straits will help domestic related firms to grab the lucrative business opportunities in China. Moreover, the standards will be able to become international standards.

A high-ranking official of the BSMI noted China has shown great interest with the medium- and small-sized vertical-shaft wind turbines with generating capacity under 150KW. It is expected that the medium- and small-sized vertical-shaft wind turbines will help China's small-sized farms to get sufficient power as these remote farms cannot access regional power grid.

Chen said there are no international standards for fire-retardant and nanometer functional textiles and Taiwan has cutting-edge technologies in this field. To speed up instituting the common standards across the Taiwan Straits, the BSMI has commissioned Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI) to set up a working team to negotiate with relevant unit in China.
