Taiwan to Launch 6th-stage (Euro 4) PTW Emission Standard in 2017
2014/05/27 | By Quincy LiangTo match the pollution-prevention standards of the industrially advanced nations, Taiwan's government promulgated sixth- and seventh-stage emissions standards for powered two-wheelers (PTWs) in late 2013, with implementation slated for 2017 and 2021, respectively.
The island's existing fifth-stage emission standard for PTWs, which was put into effect in mid-2007, is equal to the Euro 3 standard imposed by the European Union (EU). Taiwan's sixth- and seventh-stage standards will be similar to the Euro 4 and Euro 5 standards.

At the same time, the type of testing will be switched to the United Nations-approved Worldwide Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC), from the current six ECE-15 urban driving cycles (UDC) and one Extra-Urban driving cycle (EUDC).
From the sixth stage, ARTC notes, the test process will use only the SHED (Sealed Housing for Evaporative Determination) test, which is more objective for hydrocarbon (HC) testing that the canister trap or Sealed Housing Evaporative Determination (SHED) method used previously.

When Taiwan's 6th-stage emissions standard becomes effective, all new PTWs sold on the island will have to be equipped with an On-board Diagnostics (OBD) system to provide higher-precision emissions tests. In addition, more than 20% of the PTWs sold by any PTW vendor in Taiwan with an annual sales volume of more than 10,000 units will be required to meet the "zero emissions during idle speed" standard after 2017, and the ratio will be boosted to 50% in the 7th stage. Under this requirement, more and more PTWs with a stop-start function (like that now adopted by many fuel-efficient car models) or hybrid propulsion systems are expected to be introduced to the market.
