Taiwan's central government witnessed outstanding long-term (over one year) debts of NT$5.3506 trillion (US$178.35 billion) as of end of May and the short-term (less than one year) debts of NT$259 billion (US$8.63 billion), which together reached NT$5.6096 trillion (US$186.99 billion), according to the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

Compared to a month earlier, the long-term debts slightly dropped NT$1.7 billion (US$56.67 million) while short-term debts sharply declined by NT$15.5 billion (US$516.67 million), resulting in per-capita debts edging down to NT$240,000 (US$8,000) from NT$241,000 (US$8,033) for the first fall since the end of last year.

In November 2010, when MOF started to set up a national debt clock to publicize government debts, Taiwan's per-capita debt posted at NT$197,000 (US$6,567) and the figure has since increased to NT$241,000 (US$8,033) by April 2014 before inching down by NT$1,000 (US$33.33) to NT$240,000 (US$8,000) in May.
