Taiwanese Expats' Investments in Taiwan Plunge 55.8% in Q1, 2014
2014/07/01 | By Judy LiInbound investments by overseas Taiwanese reached NT$37.8 billion (US$1.26 billion) in the first quarter, plunging 55.8% from the corresponding figure of last year, according to the statistics released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).
Of which, NT$30.37 billion (US$1.012 billon) was launched in 11 ordinary cases with the investment value showing a whopping annual growth of 133.6%. However, the remaining NT$7.42 billion (US$27.33 million) was invested in three cases via a special program promoted by the Executive Yuan (the Cabinet), tumbling near 90% from last year's corresponding NT$72.5 billion (US$2.42 billion).
MOEA indicates that the decline of inbound investments by overseas Taiwanese was due mainly to land-purchasing problem resulting from soaring land prices on the island.
Nevertheless, a total of 726 private investment cases recorded in the same quarter, with investment value totaling NT$318.7 billion (US$10.623 billion), accomplishing 24.52% of the full-year goal. Enterprises with investment value of over NT$10 billion (US$333.33 million) each were all leading semiconductor and optical manufacturers including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc., and AU Optronics Corp.
Among industries, electronic & information technology drew the highest investment value of NT$142.2 billion (US$4.74 billion) for a sharp annual rise of 49.4%; and technical service sector witnessed investment value soar 123.5% to NT$23.8 billion (US$793.33 million), with NT$9 billion (US$300 million) coming from Google for its second-stage operational expansion here.
