Social networks and mobile broadband are becoming increasingly popular among the Taiwanese people, and 87.6% of the island's Internet users access social networking websites through their mobile devices, according to the latest survey results issued by the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC), a Taiwanese IT market research institute.

Of the social networking website users polled, MIC adds, nearly 80% use the websites to maintain contact with family and friends.

The survey found that while ever more people are using mobile devices to access social networking websites, 13.7% of male Internet users and 12.4% of female users do not.

MIC indicates that 21.9% of Internet users spend 30-60 minutes per day on social networking sites; 17.9% spend 16-30 minutes; 16.5% spend 1-2 hours; and 10.2% spend 1-15 minutes.

It is increasingly evident that young people stay on social networking sites longer than adults. MIC's survey shows that 29.8% of social networking site users who tend to spend one to two hours on such sites each day are aged under 19. Users aged 30-39 account for 25.8% of the total who spend 30-60 minutes a day on the sites, while over-40s make up the biggest group that spend 16-30 minutes a day. MIC concludes that the younger the users are, the greater amount of time they spend on social networking websites. (SC)
