With smart city applications increasingly causing a buzz in the global ICT (information and communication technology) industry, the Taiwanese government has approved a broadband service and industrial development project designed to boost output value of the island's 4G sector to NT$1.5 trillion (US$50 billion) by 2016, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

MOEA notes the project to focus on promoting innovative integrated services, including safety, healthcare, logistics, and online payment for recreational and entertainment activities, based on 4G communication technology island-wide to serve domestic consumers.

The project will also subsidize local firms' R&D if they are interested in developing related services and  facilities, to help generate business opportunities for players in the field and make sure the industry's development meets governmental objectives. (SC)
