Taiwan's Top-3 Telecom Jan.-Sept. Earnings Top Targets

Chunghwa, Taiwan's No.1 telecom carrier by revenue, earned NT$30.5 billion (US$1.01 billion), or NT$3.94 per diluted share, in after-tax net income, inching up 0.2% year on year and attaining 85.2% of its goal, with revenue of NT$169.1 billion (US$5.6 billion), down 1.3% YoY to attain 73.2% of its annual goal.
In September, the company made NT$3.4 billion (US$116 million), or NT$0.45 per share, in after-tax net income on revenue of NT$19.1 billion (US$636.6 million), with earnings down 5.8% YoY and revenue up 0.8% year on year.
Chunghwa executives say the company's September revenue from mobile voice service dropped 12.2% YoY due to stiff competition from voice over Internet protocol network and other providers, with revenue from mobile value-added services surging 21% thanks to persistent growth of mobile Internet customers.
Taiwan Mobile cleared NT$11.9 billion (US$398.6 million), or NT$4.45 per share, in after-tax net income for Jan.-Sept., outstripping the projected NT$4.34, with revenue of NT$82.4 billion (US$2.7 billion). In September, the company netted NT$1.2 billion (US$40.3 million), or NT$0.45 per share, on revenue of NT$9.4 billion (US$316 million).
Far EasTone made NT$9.4 billion (US$314.5 million), or NT$2.9 per share in Jan.-Sept., attaining 110% of its goal, with consolidated revenue of NT$68.1 billion (US$2.2 billion). In September, the company made NT$784 million (US$26.1 million), or NT$0.24 per share, in after-tax net income on revenue of NT$7.9 billion (US$264.4 million).
Regardless of the strong Jan.-Sept. earnings by the three telecoms, industry executives worry earnings could drop due to the high subsidy on 4G phones and the amortization of the expenditure on radio spectrum and 4G infrastructure. (KL)
