Taiwan's number of households totaled 8.37 million as of September 2014 for a slight annual growth of 1.24%, according to the statistics released by the Department of Population Administration.

Among the cities and townships, New Taipei City has the highest of 1.49 million households or 17.86% of the total, followed by Kaohsiung City and Taipei City with 1.06 million (12.71%) and 1.04 million (12.38%), respectively.

Since 2000 the number of Taiwan's households grew gradually with average annual increase of 110,000 to total 8.37 million in September 2014, being  registered mostly in six cities and counties, namely Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan County, Taichung City, Tainan City, and Kaohsiung City.

In 2000 per-household family members averaged 3.33 persons, which decreased yearly to 2.8 persons in September of this year, for an average drop of 0.53 person per household in 14 years.

C.C. Pan, general manager of Chyi Realty Co., indicates that local residents demand medium or small homes sized 900-1,260 sq.ft. or 1 to 2 rooms due to lower birth rate.

So more and more builders plan to meet such trend by offering suitable products. (JL)
