Q2's Worldwide Large-sized TFT-LCD Shipments Drop 0.9%
2015/09/21 | By Quincy LiangWorldwide shipments of large-sized (larger than 10-inch) thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels dropped by 0.9 percent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), and 10.6 percent year-on-year (YoY), to about 200 million units, according to IDC Taiwan, the local subsidiary of the global market intelligence provider.
Kevin Chen, market analyst of worldwide assembly research at IDC Taiwan, pointed out that the large-sized panels are divided into different application categories including tablet-PC, information technology (IT, including notebook PC and monitor), and LCD TV. In the second quarter, tablet-PC and IT panel shipments saw demand declines, leading to panel makers' production adjustment to lower their inventory levels of such products. Thanks to their optimism toward the upcoming peak-season demand, Chen added, most panel suppliers maintained high equipment utilization ratios to produce LCD TV panels in the second quarter.
Quoting the IDC Worldwide Large Sized LCD Panel Qview for the second quarter, IDC Taiwan said that in the second quarter the world's top-five large-sized TFT-LCD suppliers were LG Display (South Korea), Samsung Display (South Korea), Innolux Corp. (Taiwan), AU Optronics Corp. (AUO, Taiwan), and BOE (China). All the top-five players saw shipment drops during the period, due to the overall market stagnation.
LG Display topped global counterparts in shipments of notebook PC, monitor, and LCD TV panels. Innolux was the No. 2 in notebook PC and LCD TV panel categories; while another Taiwanese company AUO was the second-largest supplier of monitor panels. In terms of tablet PC panel shipments, BOE, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd. (CPT, the No. 3 panel maker in Taiwan), and SDC were major suppliers.
IDC's worldwide assembly research team forecasts that global shipments of large-sized panels are expected to see minor QoQ growth, thanks mainly to the seasonality factors.
