Apple Unveils Latest Version of iPhones

2017/09/14 | By Alan Lu

At the launch event held September 12 on the Apple Campus in the Steve Jobs Theater, Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple Inc., unveiled the newest version of its flagship device, iPhone X (pronounced as iPhone “ten”), saying it's “the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone.”

Without the classic home button, the all glass device features an OLED display called Super Retina Display. The 5.8 inches screen with a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels serves as a trouble shooter to brightness and color accuracy.

Also notable is that Apple has introduced a new function dubbed Face ID, which uses TrueDepth camera tucked in the notch at the top of the display. Users can unlock the phone by simply glancing at it.

The infrared camera enables iPhone X to recognize a user's face in the dark. In addition, Apple claims that the newly equipped A11 Bionic Chip, which stores face data of users, can offer full protection against pictures or masks.

Meanwhile, Apple Pay is compatible to Face ID, allowing users to pay by looking at the phone.

Another worth-mentioning highlight is that the new iPhones Apple announced at the event—iPhone 8, iPhone 8 plus and iPhone X—all support Qi wireless charging system developed by Wireless Power Consortium, WPC.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus start at US$699 (NT$21,000) and US$799 (NT$24,000), respectively, and the release date is September 22. iPhone X, which is scheduled to hit the market on November 3, will start at US$999 (NT$30,000).
