Giant Group seeks carbon rights for bicycle industry from EU

2022/10/27 | By EDN

As climate change impacts the world, understanding and incorporating ESG has become a necessity. Giant Group Chairman Bonnie Tu has pointed to bicycling eventually becoming the best option for commuters due to its energy-saving advantages.

Tu and other Giant Group corporate representatives attended a sustainability forum co-hosted with Commonwealth Magazine ahead of the bicycle maker's 50th anniversary.

Giant Group CEO Liu Yung-chang said that the Bicycling Alliance for Sustainability has spoken out to the European Union in hopes of advocating carbon rights for bicycles, as well as promoting and encouraging consumers to establish carbon-saving ideals.

Liu also suggested the concept of introducing a carbon-saving bicycling passport and encouraged suppliers in the supply chain, from manufacturers to material designers, to rethink how they could reduce their carbon emissions. The idea is to promote carbon footprint certification for individual products. The costs to reduce carbon could also become another form of enterprise investment should it become profitable in the long term.

Tu said Taiwan's bicycle supply chain is considered geared toward the high-end market, and as a result, the group has a bird-eyes view of the global bicycle industry's future trends. She emphasized that environmental protection and sustainability are becoming necessities, and Taiwan's bicycle industry should not be absent from the discussions.
