[right_20041001605.jpg}Winlites Ind. Co., Ltd., founded in 1976, is one of Taiwan's leading manufacturers of lamps for commercial use. In recent years the company has applied LEDs (light emitting diodes) to its product lines in response to customer demand from the U.S. and Europe, with great success.

The firm has an assembly plant in the township of Pali, just north of Taipei in Taipei County. Work at the facility is focused on the assembly of halogen lamps which are mainly for commercial use. Major product lines include table lamps, wall lamps, ceiling lamps, and other items for decoration. Unit prices of these products range from US$1 to US$10.

About seven years ago Winlites set up an integrated plant in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, southern China, to boost production capacity. David Chen, managing director of the company, says the enhanced capacity has brought the mass-production flexibility needed to allow his company to explore a wide array of new lines.

Chen says his company has cultivated and trained one of the sector's most talented teams of research and development specialists. "Our progressive matching of our R&D team's talents with those of a select corps of satellite factories has meant rapid development of brand-new products, and we have found our system works even faster in mainland China than in Taiwan," he states. "Our advantage in developing products with innovations that set the pace and direction of our industry-I.e., are not merely cosmetic--has really enhanced our international competitiveness. Also, our speedier development capabilities has given us more time to research the production of brand-new items by using new lighting sources."

Over the past two years Winlites has applied LEDs to selected lighting sources such as under-cabinet lights and display lamps for bathroom and stairway use.

"Use of the LED is still limited in scope because of brightness limitations," comments Chen. "But thanks to the efforts made by our researchers, we are now capable of mass producing the LED lamps for household use. We have extensively applied the LED to our product lines, including decorative table lamps, wall lamps and ceiling lamps."

The company boasts it has exported the LED lamps, mostly used as decorations, to the U.S. and European marketplaces. "We found the LED lamps can draw much attention of old customers because the lamps can present a variety of colors to enrich their living climate," notes Chen.

With the strong backup of the in-house researchers, Winlites will continue to develop more innovative lamps equipped with the LED lighting source in the future. To fully use its expertise in lighting fixture, over the past two years the company has formed several joint ventures with mainland manufacturers of hardware fittings to produce other industrial products.

The company will take part in the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair slated for October 27-30, 2004.
