TIGAX08 – the always popular Taipei International Graphic Arts Exhibition – will be held from August 29 to September 1, 2008. The total exhibition site next year will cover 12,500 square meter in sections B and C of the Taipei World Trade Center and will feature 715 booths. In recent years, Taiwan has maintained an economic growth rate of 4% annually. That figure is expected to rise next year along with an anticipated closer relationship between mainland China and Taiwan, after Taiwan’s next presidential election in May 2008. Undoubtedly, beneficiaries of better relations will include many in our printing and graphic arts industries. Indeed, I believe our industries will play important and expanded roles in areas as diverse as broadcasting, packaging, and the arts, and that we will also expand into new technologies such as networking to earn greatly increased profits. Today many printing processes are resulting in higher productivity that is doubling efficiency for shorter runs. In Drupa08 you will see great breakthroughs in all aspects of printing production. In TIGAX08 numerous exhibits will feature the latest innovations from both overseas and domestic manufacturers. Though CTP processes have made great strides in recent years, I am confident that in the near future we will see plate-making equipment progressing to still more exciting levels. The printing business relating to networked systems is maturing, and also keeping up with new market demands for faster printing speeds, better quality, and lower costs involving both toner and electronic ink systems. Variable image label printing will replace letterpress and flexography because of short run advantages. That is but one example of a new era of print production now on the horizon–just as digital cameras have almost completely replaced conventional film cameras, the flow of technological progress is bringing about huge changes in the printing and graphic arts industries on an almost yearly basis. Consider inkjet printing, which is now widely used for many media in numerous fields, including photography, electronics, and interior design. Inkjet printing advances for images and text, and the ability to economically produce products in almost any quantity and size is making many conventional printers reconsider their options for the future.
