Cabinet to Tender Resignation Today

2008/01/24 | By Philip Liu

Taipei, Jan. 24, 2008 (CENS)--In line with the nation's political tradition, Premier Chang Chun-hsiung and his Cabinet will resign today, enabling President Chen Shui-bian to nominate a new premier and seek confirmation of the new Cabinet by new legislators, who are expected to swear in on Feb. 1.

President Chen is widely expected to nominate Chang to head the Cabinet again for the remaining three months before he hands over his office to the next president on May 20, for the sake of political stability, in line with his statement during the recent visit to Saint Lucia.

Frank Hsieh, presidential nominee of the ruling DPP (Democratic Progressive Party), recently urged to appoint a CEO (chief executive office) to head the Cabinet, to augment administrative efficiency and neutrality, but it appears unlikely for Chen to find a qualified entrepreneur willing to serve the short term.

Vice Premier Chiou I-jen explained that the Cabinet will tender the resignation four days ahead of the original schedule of Jan. 28, so that President Chen can have more time consulting with the new premier for members of the new Cabinet.

Some personnel reshuffle is expected for the new Cabinet, with a view of facilitating presidential campaign of Frank Hsieh.
