Founded in 1990, Como Furniture Enterprise has been turning out a range of furniture, including home furniture, children's furniture, PC desks and workstations. Mostly filling OEM and ODM orders placed by world-renowned brands, with major clients in the United States and Europe, the company also markets under its own Comta brand, products labeled with which are mainly sold in China.

Captained by W.S. Ko, company founder, Como has developed very rapidly to become highly competitive globally thanks to its consistent effort to upgrade manufacturing capacity and facilities. "With a plant in the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park in central Taiwan, we adopt advanced machines, including CNC milling machine, drilling machine, die spotting machine and NC lathe, etc. to produce high-end products," Ko says.

To keep buyers interested, Como pays close attention to R&D to keep rolling out innovative products. "Design, product, quality and service" are the four main ingredients in the company's successful mode of operation. "A successful product hinges on quality material, smart design plus fine service," Ko emphasizes. "So, we constantly remind employees to prioritize quality control and always do their best to serve customers."

Repeated Winner

Instilling a sense of corporate responsibility into staffers and being accountable as well as emphasizing innovation have paid off repeatedly: The company won the "Taiwan Excellence Award" in 1999 and "Taiwan Good Design Award" in 2001. In addition, the company was cited for being an outstanding small and medium enterprise in the furniture sector-winning the 15th National Award for Small and Medium Enterprises in 2006. Moreover, Ko's commercial success has not gone unnoticed: he was honored as the "Model Entrepreneur for 2008" by the China Youth Career Development Association, a non-profit organization in Taiwan that promotes and helps Chinese business builders.

In 2005, Como adopted the ERP system to enhance management efficiency and became ISO 9001 & ISO 14000 approved in 2008.

"We view client profitability as important as our own, so we help them build success by offering competitive products," Ko states. "Plus we aim to build long-term relationships with clients that are based on loyalty."

As early as in 1998 Como set up its private label "Comta," which is an imaginative spin-off of "making life comfortable" and "coming from Taiwan." "The Comta logo looks similar to the Chinese character for man or human, which asks a viewer to ponder positive personal qualities of respect, friendliness, comfort, and trustworthiness," Ko explains. "Our products tend to feature cool colors, such as gray, black, and white for they symbolize peace, security, and stability."

Focusing on Children's Furniture

In recent years Como has been focusing on children's furniture, having brainstormed to create a series of ergonomic children's desks featuring multifunctionality and accommodation for even a child's physical growth. For instance, its "Growing Desk" won the "Taiwan Good Design Award" in 2008. Like a drafting table, this children's desk is height-adjustable from 58 to 78 cm, so a child won't grow out of it too quickly; while the tabletop is also tilt-adjustable from 17 to 20 degrees, a range believed to be the most user-friendly.

Obviously a believer in going the extra yard to be especially competitive, Ko is committed to structuring Como into a total-solution provider. More than merely supplying furniture to order, it also offers design service, mold development, tools, mechanical components, spare parts, assembly, maintenance, and other assistance to facilitate business transactions. "While working hard to reinforce our strength in the furniture circle, I believe success always comes to those who are ambitious, confident and industrious," Ko remarks.
