So far, 170 representatives from 21 APEC member economies have registered to attend the meeting, which will be third such meeting held by ABAC in Taiwan, following 1998 and 2004. Tsai Hung-tu, chief of Taiwan ABAC team, hoped yesterday (May11) that the meeting will enable Taiwan to raise its international profile and share its experience in fostering the development of small and medium enterprises with APEC members.
ABAC comprises up to three members of the private sector from each of APEC's 21 member economies. ABAC members are appointed by their respective leaders and represent a range of business sectors, including small and medium enterprises. The members convene four times every year to discuss various regional business issues and submit their conclusions to APEC as the basis for dialogue among APEC member leaders.
The ABAC meeting in Taipei will embrace the theme "dedication to sustainable growth for all." In addition to Tsai Hung-hu, Matthew Miao, chairman of Mitac Group, and Cher Wang, chairperson of HTC, will also represent Taiwan to attend the meeting. Cher Wang will propose pushing the development of information-communications technology to drive the economic growth of the region, which has been put on the agenda for a session on knowledge-based growth of the meeting.
