2011/03/14 | By Judy Li

Taipei, March 14, 2011 (CENS)--Taiwan ranks 37th globally in terms of travel and tourism competitiveness, according to the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2011compiled by the World Economic Forum (WEF), with the ranking rising six notches from 2009's No. 43. The report is based on a survey of 139 industrialized and emerging economies focusing on measures, policies that help develop the travel and tourism industry.

The WEF surveyed the travel and tourism potential of various nations according to three major criteria—human capital and natural & cultural resources; tourism, information & communication technology infrastructure, and price competitiveness; and policy rules & regulations and environmental regulations.

Taiwan scores 4.56 points on the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI). With considerable official effort, Taiwan has seen rapidly rising in-bound tourists from the U.S., Europe, South Korea, and Southeast Asia over the last two years, showing the island's great potential to become an important tourist destination.

The 2011 WEF report shows the top-five tourist destination nations to be all in Europe, with Switzerland leading, followed by Germany, France, Austria and Sweden.
