Grand Prize Award Winner:

During the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in eastern Japan, transportation was improved through the car navigational system of the Traffic Record Map service (Internavi is the name of this information service of Honda's car navigational system).

Company: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.

Designer: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.

With data collected from cars using its car navigational system, Honda released actual traffic and congestion data for the areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, that improved traffic flow in those parts of eastern Japan.

In 2003 Honda launched "Internavi," a two-way navigational system that collects data from the trips of customers to determine the best route to a destination. When the 2011 earthquake and tsunami occurred, the navigational data started to help in the rescue efforts as soon as the following day, with volunteer groups, rescue teams, and others bound for the affected areas using this publicly available data. And Honda ensured the consistency of the data, releasing updates from the previous 24 hours every morning at ten, which helped those en route. After the earthquake and tsunami, other automobile manufacturers joined in this mutual effort by providing their own data. Who could have predicted that this two-way car navigational system would be employed during the disaster? In building on this experience, we hope that the same level of assistance can be offered to people around the world in disaster areas. This entry received much praise from judges who were impressed both with the company's years of efforts in its development and with its contributions to the rescue efforts following the earthquake and tsunami in eastern Japan.

Thin-film solar module

Company: Sharp Corporation

Designer: Sharp Corporation

This Module Panel is a flameless laminated glass structure that improves power generation through achieving thinness and reducing dirt accumulation. As principal energy resources, fossil and nuclear fuels are finite, and in crisis situations such as earthquake disasters severe nuclear power plant problems can occur. We believe that our design is needed to protect the environment in the future.

3D SMART LED TV

Company: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

Designer: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

In this design the panel itself is transformed into the exterior, creating an expression of color using the refraction of light based on double injection molding.

The design had a very positive effect on judges on the expo floor, causing them to stop in their tracks. With its dominating presence, the design differs significantly from televisions that have been manufactured to date. This 3D Smart LED TV executes complex operations effortlessly, and none of the processing operations in the inner part of the frame are unnecessary.

Bolt and Nut

Company: NejiLaw Inc.

Designer: NejiLaw Inc.

Designed to accept both right and left-hand nuts, this non-spiral, bolt-shaping screw helps to achieve an ideal, repeated-use nut-bolt fastening system in which loosening does not occur. Screws are used in such essential aspects of modern life as vehicles, aircrafts, bridges, and highways. With conventional screws, loosening happens through friction, which requires periodic checking and/or retightening and creates an enormous social burden in terms of cost, effort, and public risk. Our non-loosening screws are designed to eliminate this social burden, thus contributing to creating a more sustainable society.

In vitro diagnostic system

Company: Sysmex Corporation

Designer: Sysmex Corporation

As a result of the product development process, the focus of the in vitro diagnostic system has become improving the healthcare testing environment through better product design concept and usability.
