Taiwan Int'l Lighting Show Covers Entire Supply Chain

Show size has doubled since debut to likely exceed 1,000 booths this year

Since its debut in 2010, the Taiwan International Lighting Show (TILS) has doubled in size and will likely see over 1,000 booths booked this year, which seems insignificant when compared with the larger international exhibitions held by other industries, albeit encouraging for an emerging industry like green lighting.

Held March 13-16 in the main exhibition hall of the Taipei World Trade Center, the TILS owes its success to bringing together up-, mid- and downstream manufacturers, showing the full strength of Taiwan's lighting industry, hence attracting buyers from all over the world and having built a global reputation.

Reiterating its formula for success, Walter Yeh, executive vice president of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), which organizes the event with the Taiwan Lighting Fixture Export Association (TLFEA) under the auspices of the Bureau of Foreign Trade, says that the exhibition has always been organized to cover the entire up-, mid- and downstream supply chain in the lighting industry, which is key to attracting buyers from around the world.

Heavyweight Participation
Yeh also attributes the show's popularity to the support from the heavyweights of industry, whose participation lends credibility and shows industrial cohesiveness. Among the major exhibitors are Epistar Corporation, Delta Electronics, Everlight, Edison-Opto Corporation, China Electric MFG. Corp. Taiwan Lighting, Energyled Corporation, SemiLEDs Corporation, AMKO SOLOARA Lighting Co., Future Lighting Solution, LVD International Light & Energy Corp., TYC Brother Industrial Corp., and others engaged in optotronics and related industries.

Moreover, the TAITRA, through its overseas offices, has invited big Japanese lighting companies, including Nichia, Toshiba and Panasonic, to participate, aiming to show Taiwan's complete supply chain to build partnerships between Japanese and Taiwanese firms.

Unlike many trade shows that are being over-extended in coverage, the TILS is the sole lighting-excusive international show held in Taiwan, whose dedicated content draws major foreign buyers from around the world, including this year many who have pre-registered to participate: LLUM RONZEARTE Ind. Co. of Brazil, ABDULL AHOGLU Elektric San. Ve Tic. Ltd. of Turkey, Excel Lighting & Manufacturing Ltd., of Canada, TRILUX GMBH & Co. of Germany, AGAS SP. Z O.O. of Poland, Epicentrk of Ukraine, among others.

International Meetings
Besides a product exhibition, the TILS will stage a series of international meetings attended by industry representatives and experts from around the world, which will also broaden the scope of the event and noteworthiness.

The GLF (Global Lighting Forum) will hold its annual meeting this year in Taipei during the exhibition. Made up of the world's lighting trade associations and arranging annual meeting for industry representatives to share developments in lighting-related technology, regulations, product trends, market opportunities, and global lighting policies in various regions and markets, the GLF and its estimated 5,000 members will attend the annual meeting to discuss new trends in global lighting.

Taking advantage of the staging of the GLF's annual meeting in Taiwan this year, the TILS organizers are specially holding an international forum on March 13 themed “Global lighting market and trends in manufacturing development.” GLF members are invited to speak at the international forum, including ELCOMA (the Electric Lamp and Component Manufacturers' Association of India), JELMA (the Japan Electric Lamp Manufacturers Association), ELC (the European Lamp Companies Federation), LCA (the Lighting Council Australia), NEMA (the National Electrical Manufacturers Association) and other industry experts.

Adding further substance to the TILS, CIE-Taiwan, inaugurated in 2009 as a national-level member of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), will also hold its annual meeting on March 14 under the theme “lighting industry standards.”

The CIE, established in 1913 and headquartered in Paris, France, is an authoritative international organization of optics, lighting, and related fields. In recent years, it has more actively promoted the setting of new international standards for lighting. CIE-Taiwan meanwhile acts in accordance with the CIE charter and promotes unifying Taiwanese and international standards, builds for Taiwanese lighting businesses a standard platform upon which to participate globally.

Moreover, the TILS organizers will hold the Cross-straits Lighting Industry Forum and Lighting Industry Conference on March 14 and 15 respectively, with the former to invite renowned lighting operators from China and Taiwan to discuss “trends in the development of Asian manufacturing,” aiming to promote understanding of lighting markets both sides of the straits, new technologies and business opportunities.

The Lighting Industry Conference, scheduled for March 15, will be a full day of discussions, where renowned lighting operators and experts will share views, insights on energy sources and future development trends of the lighting industry.
