Performance-tuning or high-performance parts and accessories is undoubtedly one of the fastest-changing segments in the global auto-parts business in recent years; so players have to be more careful and adopt right strategies to better survive in a lull, while waiting for another crest in demand, says Bruce Liu, chairman of Camco Auto Sangyo Co., the largest and most comprehensive supplier of performance-tuning parts in Taiwan.

Sharing his experience in surviving bad times by foreseeing market trends and promoting suitable products, Liu says that Camco focuses on high-end performance auto parts and accessories to build steady growth.

All global tuning-parts makers face fierce underselling competition from Chinese counterparts, and the only way for local companies to better survive is to move upmarket, or to develop and manufacture high-quality and reliable products for luxury cars. The golden rule being higher technical level and quality can prevent a company from being supplanted by counterparts, says Liu.

In the past few years, Camco has achieved success in continuously launching performance-tuning total solutions for chassis, including high-end shock absorbers with aluminum tube, oversized brake rotors, forged aluminum multi-piston brake calipers, reinforced bushings for control arms, differentials and engine mounts etc., which provide performance car fans a wide range of vehicle modification and upgrading options, says Liu.

The core behind smooth sales of these high-end chassis tuning parts, Liu discloses, is racing team sponsorship by the company and suppliers, who can test parts on race tracks and under extreme conditions.

One example is the oversized brake rotors (286mm to 405mm in diameter) which are made of high-grade FC-30 ferrous steel with higher hardness and friction resistance compared to counterparts made of FC-20 steel. The company also supplies top-end 4-, 6- or 8-piston calipers made of high-grade forged aluminum alloy, with quality oil seals made in industrially advanced nations to assure reliability.

The high-end suspension/steering/chassis parts adopt top-end resin bushings with hardness as high as 60-degree in control arms, engine mounts, tie rod ends etc., which greatly upgrade steering response in high-speed driving.

Camco mainly offers high-end chassis tuning parts for European makes and models, Liu says, and the parts are widely welcome by major customers in industrially advanced markets in Europe, the U.S., and Japan, which are also Camco's major export markets. (QL)
