Taiwan's LED makers expect booming business into 2014.
Robert Yeh, chairman of LED maker Everlight Electronic Co., Ltd., announced at the company's Jan. 19 yearend banquet that its earnings for 2014 will be better than 2013's estimate of  NT$3.5 per share while projecting the company's revenue for 2014 to rise 25% year on year.

According to the LED packager's executives, major growth drivers for the company's 2014 revenue are LED lighting, LED infrared device, and LED backlight markets, with LED lighting holding the most promise for many years.

Yeh says that rarely can one find an industry nowadays that enjoys a staggering compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 30% like LED lighting, and that 2013 was the beginning for LED lighting to increase market penetration while 2014 is the year for the penetration to shoot up.

Industry executives estimate Everlight's non-consolidated revenue for 2014 at NT$25.6 billion (US$853.3 million) and the revenue for 2013 at NT$20.6 billion (US$686.6 million). On a consolidated basis, the company's revenue is estimated at NT$30 billion (US$1 billion) for 2014 and NT$24.7 billion (US$823.3 million) for 2013.

Like most of its industry peers at home including chipmaker Epistar Corp., Evelight is experiencing sales surge in the normally low season in the first quarter thanks to vigorous inventory replenishments by customers, which will force suppliers to work through the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays to meet delivery deadline.

Industry executives feel that the island's LED industry will see three advantages this year for development: robust LED business opportunity, no more reckless competition in capacity expansion and underselling, and high-end products dominating market, which will discourage underselling rivalry. (KL)
