Green was the theme at the 2012 Automechanika Frankfurt, the world's largest auto-parts, accessory, and repair equipment exhibition, with about 4,500 exhibitors and some 160,000 global visitors attending this year. The show also has steadily honed its reputation as the go-to event for auto parts and innovations since the debut of its "Green Directory" in 2008.
The Green Directory is a buyer's guide focused on aftermarket auto parts meeting environmental protection and sustainability criteria. "No issue has such a decisive role in the future of the automotive industry as climate protection," says show organizer Messe Frankfurt.
The 2012 issue of the Automechanika Green Directory introduces emission-cutting and other eco-friendly auto products from 25 companies.
The competition was open to all exhibitors at Automechanika 2012, held in mid-September. A total of 57 companies submitted products in eight categories (Parts, Systems, Accessories, Tuning, Repair/Diagnostics, Repair/Maintenance, IT & Management, and Service Station & Car Wash). Twenty-three of the exhibitors were from Germany (40%) and 34 from other countries (60%).
Dr. Gerhard Angerer, an expert at the Fraunhofer-Institute for System and Innovation Research (ISI), examined all entries with regard to their innovativeness and sustainability. Points were awarded for the subsequent evaluation of material and energy efficiency and carbon footprint.
Since 2010, the top-scoring product has been singled out for a special award. This year, the honor went to Prins Autogassystemen BV with its Prins Direct LiquiMax System, a bivalent fuel system for petrol and liquid petroleum gas (LPG). The system scored high on innovation, contribution to environmental protection, and its benefit in making cheaper fuels available to drivers without loss of mobility. The system is suitable for both the aftermarket and original equipment (OE) market.
