Clarivate yesterday released its 2026 Top 100 Global Innovators report, listing Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) as one of the top 100 global innovators for the tenth time. According to Clarivate, ITRI constantly demonstrates exceptional performance in innovation. Under the yearly evaluation theme, where artificial intelligence is shifting the location of innovation value from the physical to the cognitive, Clarivate sees ITRI as an institution that can outperform on a global scale as it enters the cognitive economy. Supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Department of Industrial Technology, ITRI has continued to invest in patented research and development, extending its record of consecutive recognitions to ten years.

Clarivate is a leading global provider of transformative intelligence. Operating through assessing the innovative capacity of corporations and institutions worldwide through enriched data, insights, analytics, and workflow solutions. Clarivate applies quantitative and scientific indicators to identify organizations with sustained commitment to innovation and exceptional inventive output.

Maroun S. Mourad, President of Clarivate’s Intellectual Property, noted that the honor to ITRI is not simply based on its long-term dedication to patent protection, but also on its ability to translate advanced research and development results into practical, industry-ready technologies.

ITRI was among the only three research institutions selected this year. According to the five core patent selection metrics from Derwent World Patents Index™ (DWPI) and Derwent Patent Citations Index™ (DPCI), which provide a holistic view of an organization's innovative performance, ITRI has successfully met Clarivate’s selection of volume, influence, globalization, success rate, and uniqueness. Its innovation performance has been placed alongside leading global enterprises, including ASML, Apple, Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba, Qualcomm, and Dow.

ITRI President Pei-jen Chang said the tenth recognition highlights the institute’s expertise and global competitiveness in intellectual property. In response to an increasingly volatile environment, ITRI is advancing three strategic priorities: cultivating top-tier talent, strengthening Taiwan’s innovation base, and expanding its global footprint. By integrating cross-disciplinary research and development competence across academia, industry, and research institutions, ITRI is building a collaborative value chain that tightly links talent development with industrial demands.

ITRI is also prioritizing key fields such as drones and robotics to accelerate the conversion of high-quality patents into tangible drivers of industrial upgrading. These efforts aim to support high-tech industries and the digital transformation of traditional SME. ITRI also has nearly double the number of its overseas patents compared to domestic fields, forming collaborations with partners worldwide.
