MIRDC Strengthens ESG Commitment with Greenhouse Gas Certification
2025/06/24 | By CENSAs the global push for carbon reduction intensifies, the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) is taking decisive steps to align with sustainability goals. In 2024, MIRDC officially pledged its commitment to the ESG Sustainability Initiative, reinforcing its role in driving environmental responsibility. In December of the same year, the organization published its first ESG Sustainability Report and introduced the ISO 14064-1 greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment. Following a rigorous verification process, MIRDC successfully obtained certification in February 2025, marking a major milestone in its journey toward net-zero emissions. A formal certification ceremony was held in March, underscoring the institution's dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and establishing a comprehensive GHG inventory system.
To ensure thorough and accurate emissions tracking, MIRDC conducted GHG inventories across 45 units, encompassing emissions not only from office electricity consumption but also from process laboratories, experimental facilities, and various training activities. Recognizing the importance of independent verification, MIRDC enlisted the expertise of the Green Technology Research Institute (GTRI), a third-party professional inspection body. The certification, granted in February 2025, covered MIRDC’s Kaohsiung Headquarters and Traditional Industries Innovation Centre, with verified total GHG emissions of 4,479.356 metric tons of CO₂e.
MIRDC has also launched targeted sustainability initiatives to drive energy efficiency and emission reductions. Key measures include optimizing air-conditioning systems, transitioning to electronic operations, upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting, and enhancing laboratory insulation to reduce power consumption. In addition to its in-house efforts, MIRDC has played a pivotal role in assisting industries with their own sustainability transitions. As an accredited “Greenhouse Gas Inspection Organization” under the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF), the center has trained 422 carbon inventory and reduction professionals. Its work has led to substantial industry-wide impact, facilitating the adoption of recycled and low-carbon aluminum materials to cut emissions by 44,424 metric tons of CO₂e, while overall carbon reduction efforts have amounted to 134,474 metric tons of CO₂e.
