Taiwan's First Certified Electric Intercity Bus Unveiled by Chengyun — Pioneering a New Era in Highway Transport
2025/07/22 | By CENSAt the 2025 Taiwan Hydrogen and Electric Bus Net-Zero Mobility Forum held on July 22 at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center South Hall, Chengyun Automobile unveiled Taiwan’s first certified electric intercity bus, marking a major milestone in the nation’s transition to sustainable public transportation.
The bus features localization of 10 key components, including the vehicle body assembly, steel chassis, battery pack, Battery Management System (BMS), and Vehicle Control Unit (VCU)—all independently designed, developed, and manufactured by Chengyun. To ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience, it is equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEBS).
Chengyun began developing fast-charging electric buses in 2016 and successfully completed the Ministry of Transportation’s demonstration program for three consecutive years. As of 2023, the company became a qualified vendor under Taiwan’s Electric Bus Promotion Program. Chengyun’s battery box has passed the stringent ECE R100.03 testing, and its vehicles are equipped with autonomous driving assistance systems supporting CSF and ACSF-B1 functions—ensuring the highest levels of operational safety for both drivers and passengers.
As the only electric bus manufacturer in Taiwan offering a full lineup of models, Chengyun's electric fleet includes 12-meter two-door low-floor city buses, 9-meter one-door city buses, 7-meter city buses, and 12-meter one-door intercity buses. The company has delivered over 400 electric buses for public operation across cities and counties throughout Taiwan.
To meet the demands of long-distance highway transport, Chengyun developed a 450kW six-phase direct-drive motor, engineered specifically for intercity buses. Delivering 603 horsepower, this domestically built motor meets top international standards and enables a top speed of 105 km/h, providing powerful and efficient performance even on steep highway routes.
The 12-meter electric intercity bus is powered by a self-developed 218kW fast-charging battery pack, capable of charging from 20% to 80% state of charge (SOC) in just 15 minutes using 3C fast-charging technology. With a single-charge range of approximately 227 km and a daily operational capacity of up to 1,000 km, the vehicle demonstrates that electric buses can fully meet the needs of long-haul passenger transport—offering a clean, zero-emissions solution.
To further strengthen its supply chain and manufacturing capabilities, Chengyun is investing in an Electric Bus Industrial Park in the Zhongke Erlin Industrial Zone, spanning 20 hectares, with construction scheduled for completion in March 2027. The facility will feature standardized production lines and automated manufacturing systems to achieve smart, high-efficiency production, create 600 new jobs, and boost local industry. Upon completion, annual capacity is expected to reach 2,000 complete vehicles and 10,000 knock-down (KD) kits, supporting both domestic and international markets.
Chengyun is also expanding into international markets. On December 7, 2024, a shipment of 30 electric buses departed from Taipei Port bound for Paraguay, where they will begin demonstration operations in March 2025. This marks the company’s first overseas deployment, signaling the official global debut of Taiwan’s electric bus industry. Based on operational feedback and data from Paraguay, Chengyun aims to offer customized solutions to global markets, including powertrains, complete vehicles, and turnkey factory solutions, strengthening Taiwan’s leadership in the global electric mobility ecosystem.
Through continuous innovation and international collaboration, Chengyun is committed to delivering cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable mobility solutions for the world.
